Ensuring You Are Fully Informed and Confident in Your Decision
In healthcare, your active participation in treatment decisions is not just a right - it's a fundamental part of achieving a successful outcome. At Orthopaedic Innovation, our entire approach is built on a foundation of transparency and trust. Our consenting process for hip and knee surgery is designed to be more than just a legal formality; it's a comprehensive conversation that ensures you are fully informed and confident in every choice you make about your health.
This blog outlines our meticulous process for obtaining your informed consent for surgery, as well as the separate and equally important process for consenting to a patient testimonial video.
What Does Informed Consent for Surgery Actually Mean?
Informed consent is the process by which a patient gives permission for a medical procedure after receiving and understanding all the necessary information. This includes:
- The nature of the procedure: What the surgery involves.
- Potential benefits and outcomes: What the surgery aims to achieve.
- Risks and side effects: An honest discussion of all potential risks, both common and rare.
Alternatives to the procedure: What other options are available, including non-surgical treatments.
What is Our Consenting Process for Hip & Knee Surgery?
We have a multi-step process to ensure you feel fully informed and in control of your hip or knee surgery.
Step 1: The Initial Consultation.
This is where the journey begins. Your surgeon, whether it's our lead hip surgeon Dr. Kristian Kley or lead knee surgeon Professor Adrian Wilson, will have an in-depth discussion with you. They will explain your diagnosis, detail the recommended procedure, and answer all of your questions.
Step 2: Provision of Comprehensive Information.
Following the consultation, we provide you with all the necessary materials, including patient guides and links to reliable resources, to give you time to consider the information.
Step 3: The Consenting Form.
You will receive a detailed consenting form that outlines the procedure, risks, benefits, and alternatives. We encourage you to read this carefully and use it to prompt any further questions you may have. Your surgeons will also visit you on the day of the surgery before and after to ensure everything is ok.
Step 4: Shared Decision-Making.
The final decision is a partnership. We ensure you have ample time to process the information and ask any final questions before you agree to proceed.
How Does Consenting for Patient Testimonial Videos Work?
Sharing a testimonial can be an inspiring way to help other patients feel more confident about their own journey. We are incredibly grateful to our patients who agree to share their stories, and we ensure the consenting process for this is just as meticulous as our surgical consent.
- Explicit and Voluntary Consent. We never pressure patients to give a testimonial. The decision is entirely voluntary and is always sought once you are well into your recovery and happy with your outcome.
- Full Control Over Your Content. You have complete control over the video content. We will not use any part of the testimonial without your explicit approval.
- Privacy and Confidentiality. We will discuss exactly what information will be shared and ensure your identity and data are handled with the utmost care.
- Right to Withdraw Consent. You have the right to withdraw your consent at any time, for any reason, and we will immediately remove your testimonial from all platforms.

We believe that an empowered patient, who is fully informed and confident in their choices, is a partner in their own success. We are dedicated to building a partnership with you that is founded on trust, transparency, and a shared goal of achieving the best possible outcome for your health.
