>> Polar Care Wave vs Physiolab vs Game Ready: Which Cold Compression System Is Right for Recovery?

A practical guide to cold compression therapy after hip or knee surgery

As you can imagine, pain, swelling and stiffness are very common after hip or knee surgery. That being said, there are many ways to alleviate the discomfort; with cold compression therapy being a main tool.

At Orthopaedic Innovation, we’ve identified three popular systems patients use. These are the Polar Care Wave, Physiolab and Game Ready. As part of our Kley Rapid Hip pathway, we recommend the Polar Care Wave after surgery to support swelling control, comfort and early mobilisation. And we get into why below!

Note: this guide is not a substitute for medical advice. If your pain is worsening, your wound is not healing as expected, your joint feels unstable, or you are unsure which product is suitable, speak to a surgeon, physiotherapist or healthcare professional first.

Why Cold Compression Therapy Can Help Recovery

Recovery is not defined by a successful operation. After hip or knee surgery, the swelling and discomfort may affect sleep, walking, movement and confidence with rehabilitation.

Even when surgery has gone well, the early recovery phase can feel difficult if the joint feels tight, heavy or inflamed. This is where cold compression therapy steps in, It combines two recovery tools:

  • Cold therapy to help with pain and inflammation symptoms
  • Compression to help support swelling control

It should sit alongside proper rehabilitation, walking guidance and medical follow-up, rather than replacing them.

Polar Care Wave: What It Is and How It Helps

The Polar Care Wave1 is a cold compression therapy system designed to help manage swelling, discomfort and inflammation after surgery, injury or activity-related flare-ups.

Unlike some recovery tools, the Polar Care Wave can be used with the appropriate pad after hip replacement or knee surgery

How is it applied?

The pad is placed around the area being treated, then connected to the device so cold therapy and compression can be delivered in a controlled way.

By combining cooling with active compression, it offers a more structured alternative to repeatedly applying and replacing ice packs during early recovery. This can be especially helpful when patients are trying to manage swelling, stay comfortable and keep moving as part of their rehabilitation plan.

Physiolab: What It Is and How It Helps

Next up is Physiolab2: another cold compression system used for post-operative swelling, pain relief and injury recovery. Its S1 Portable system is designed for home use and combines controlled cooling with compression.

What are the specs?

Physiolab lists temperature guidance of 6–12°C, treatment times of 5–30 minutes and adjustable compression levels of 25–75 mmHg. This may appeal to patients who want a more adjustable system with clear treatment settings.

On top of this, Physiolab has a structured rental service available for after surgery which you can use either when resting up or at the hospital instead of buying a device outright.

Game Ready: What It Is and How It Helps

And lastly, the Game Ready3. The Game Ready is a well-known cold compression system used in post-operative recovery, sports injury treatment and rehabilitation settings.

How cold does it get?

The Game Ready GRPro 2.1 combines cold therapy and intermittent compression. Game Ready lists adjustable cold therapy between an impressive 2–10°C  and describes the system as providing consistent temperature across the wrap when the reservoir is full of ice.

Usually, the Game Ready is recommended for patients who want a higher-end recovery system; particularly where it has been recommended by a surgeon, physiotherapist or sports medicine team. It is often associated with clinic, rehabilitation and sports medicine settings, as well as home recovery programmes where available.

How Do Polar Care Wave, Physiolab and Game Ready Compare?

Remember: the right choice is not simply the most advanced machine. Focus on the system that matches your surgery, symptoms, recovery goals, budget and clinical advice.

Why We Recommend Polar Care Wave

At Orthopaedic Innovation, our focus is on recovery that feels clear, supported and practical.

A big USP of our Kley Rapid Hip pathway is that patients are able/encouraged to mobilise early and build confidence with walking and everyday movement. Also, due to the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, we’re able to treat a lot of older individuals and patients with a high BMI who in some cases haven’t walked in years.

Swelling control and comfort make that process even easier.

We recommend the Polar Care Wave because it offers:

  • Cold and compression in one system
  • A structured alternative to repeated ice packs
  • Home recovery support after hip or knee surgery
  • Use with appropriate pads for different areas
  • Support for swelling control and comfort
  • A practical fit for rapid recovery pathways

As we’ve covered, it is not the only cold compression system available with both Physiolab and Game Ready established options. But for many patients, Polar Care Wave is a practical and accessible way to support recovery at home.

What Do Patients Say?

One patient, Andrew, said: “The ice machine. It kept all the swelling down and I've since referred other friends to that device and they've raved about it as well.”

When to Be Careful

As with all recovery treatments, cold therapy should be used carefully.

Seek medical advice before using cold compression if you have:

  • Poor circulation
  • Altered skin sensation
  • Nerve problems
  • Cold sensitivity
  • Fragile skin
  • Wound-healing concerns
  • Any uncertainty after surgery

Finally: always follow your surgeon’s instructions. Do not place cold therapy directly on unprotected skin or use it for longer than advised. Stop using it and seek advice if you notice numbness, skin changes, increased pain or unusual swelling.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Cold Compression System

Do your research. Before choosing a cold compression device, make sure to ask:

  • Has my surgeon or physiotherapist recommended cold compression?
  • Am I recovering from hip replacement, knee replacement or another procedure?
  • Which pad is appropriate for the area being treated?
  • Is it better for me to buy or rent a device?
  • How often should I use it?
  • How long should each session last?
  • Are there any medical reasons I should avoid cold therapy?
  • What should I do if my skin feels numb, painful or unusually cold?

If you are unsure, speak to your surgeon, physiotherapist or healthcare team before using it.

Choosing the Right Support for Recovery

Cold compression therapy may support recovery after hip or knee surgery by helping patients manage swelling, discomfort and post-operative inflammation in a more structured way than standard ice packs.

Polar Care Wave, Physiolab and Game Ready are all recognised options, but the right choice depends on your operation, symptoms, recovery goals and clinical advice.
