What is Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgery?

If you're dealing with chronic hip pain or limited mobility, your doctor may have discussed the option of hip replacement. But what exactly is minimally invasive hip replacement surgery, and is it better than traditional approaches?

At Orthopaedic Innovation, we specialise in minimally invasive techniques specifically, the Kley Rapid Hip approach, which is designed to reduce pain, accelerate recovery, and improve long-term outcomes.

In this guide, you'll find expert insights and trusted resources to help you make an informed decision.

Kley Rapid Hip - Rapid Recovery Hip Replacement technique

Understanding Hip Replacement Surgery

A hip replacement involves removing damaged bone and cartilage from your hip joint and replacing it with artificial components (called ‘prostheses’). This procedure is most commonly recommended for people suffering from hip arthritis or injury-related degeneration.

To learn more about the general principles of joint replacement, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)1 offers an insightful overview.

What Makes Hip Surgery ‘Minimally Invasive’?

A minimally invasive hip replacement approach is characterised by a smaller incision (typically 7–10 cm) and aims to preserve muscle and soft tissue. Rather than detaching major muscles, the surgeon navigates between them to access the hip joint.

This approach was created to ensure:

  • Less blood loss
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Faster rehabilitation
  • Smaller scars

It’s important to note that the term "minimally invasive" refers to technique—not the extent of joint replacement.

Orthopaedic Innovation’s Kley Rapid Hip Approach

At Orthopaedic Innovation, we have refined this technique into our signature Kley Rapid Hip replacement. Combining a modified Rottinger approach with muscle-sparing access, this protocol enables:

  • 98% of patients to be discharged within 24 hours
  • Most to walk unaided within hours of surgery
  • Exceptional safety outcomes (0% infection, 0% dislocation in the UK)

We use durable, high-performance implants and advanced pain control methods to ensure an efficient recovery.

What Happens During Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgery?

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. Your consultant surgeon will:

  1. Make a small incision (usually anterior or anterolateral)
  2. Gently part muscle fibres instead of cutting them
  3. Remove the damaged joint surfaces
  4. Fit and secure the prosthetic components
  5. Ensure alignment and joint movement
  6. Close the incision with minimal disruption

Who’s a Good Candidate?

Minimally invasive hip replacement is suitable for many patients, but certainly ideal if you:

  • Are under 75 and in good health
  • Have a healthy hip bursa anatomy
  • Have not undergone previous complex hip surgeries
  • Are motivated to begin recovery right away

Your consultant will assess your specific needs.

What About Recovery Time?

With the Kley Rapid Hip:

  • You may walk with support within a few hours
  • Many return to work or moderate activity within one to two weeks
  • Full recovery is often achieved in six –12 weeks

At Orthopaedic Innovation, we also include pre-habilitation to strengthen your muscles and prepare you for surgery. This has proven to improve the recovery process.
