Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Joint injections designed to improve lubrication and movement.

Hyaluronic acid joint injections are a well-established treatment used to improve joint lubrication and reduce stiffness in people with joint degeneration. Most commonly used in the knee, they are designed to support smoother, more comfortable movement over time.

Rather than targeting inflammation directly, hyaluronic acid injections work by improving the mechanical environment within the joint, helping it move more efficiently and with less friction.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the body, with particularly high concentrations in synovial fluid; the fluid that lubricates and cushions healthy joints.

Within the joint, hyaluronic acid helps to:

  • Reduce friction between joint surfaces
  • Absorb shock during movement
  • Support smooth, controlled motion

In conditions such as osteoarthritis, the natural hyaluronic acid within the joint becomes reduced in both quality and quantity, contributing to stiffness, discomfort, and reduced mobility.

This treatment approach is known as “viscosupplementation” - injecting hyaluronic acid directly into the joint helps restore these properties and improve joint function.

Improving Joint Mechanics: How Hyaluronic Acid Injections Work

Hyaluronic acid injections are delivered directly into the joint space.

Once inside the joint, the injected hyaluronic acid:

  • Improves the viscosity and elasticity of synovial fluid
  • Reduces friction between joint surfaces
  • Enhances shock absorption during everyday movement

Symptom improvement typically develops gradually over several weeks, rather than immediately. These injections are designed to improve joint function, not regenerate cartilage or reverse osteoarthritis.

Duration of Effect: What to Expect

Response to hyaluronic acid injections varies between individuals and depends on joint condition and severity of degeneration.

  • Benefits usually develop progressively
  • Symptom relief may last several months or longer
  • Repeat treatment cycles may be considered as part of an ongoing joint care plan

Your clinician will advise on expected outcomes based on your individual situation.

The HA Injection Procedure

Hyaluronic acid injections are performed as a simple outpatient procedure, usually completed within 15–30 minutes.

Before the injection

  • Diagnosis and suitability are confirmed
  • The procedure and expected outcomes are explained

During the injection

  • The skin is cleaned and numbed with local anaesthetic
  • Hyaluronic acid is injected into the joint
  • Ultrasound guidance may be used where accuracy is required

After the injection

  • You can stand, walk, and leave the clinic immediately
  • Normal daily activities can usually be resumed the same day
  • Mild soreness or swelling may occur temporarily

Ostensil® and Ostensil Plus®

At Orthopaedic Innovation, we work with TRB Chemedica’s hyaluronic acid range including Ostensil® and Ostensil Plus®, both developed to support joint lubrication and function.

Ostensil®

  • Contains highly purified hyaluronic acid
  • Typically administered as a course of injections
  • Designed to improve joint lubrication and reduce stiffness

Ostensil Plus®

  • Combines hyaluronic acid with mannitol, an antioxidant
  • Designed to help protect hyaluronic acid within the joint
  • Delivered as a single-injection option

Our clinician will advise which option is most appropriate based on joint condition, symptoms, and treatment goals. In selected cases, hyaluronic acid injections may also be used in other synovial joints under specialist guidance.

Specialist-Led Care

Our team specialises in joint preservation and minimally invasive treatments. Hyaluronic acid injections are used selectively and integrated into personalised joint care plans designed to support long-term mobility.

With over 2,500 successful procedures and world-leading expertise, we provide the most advanced non-surgical knee treatments available.

Frequently asked questions about Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid injections are most commonly used for osteoarthritis, particularly of the knee. They may also be considered for other joints where reduced joint lubrication is contributing to stiffness and discomfort.

Most patients tolerate the procedure well. Injections are performed under local anaesthetic, and discomfort is usually mild and short-lived.

There is usually no downtime. Most patients return to normal activities the same day, with gradual symptom improvement over the following weeks.

Symptom relief varies, but many patients experience improvement for several months or longer. Repeat treatments may be considered depending on response.

Steroid injections primarily reduce inflammation, while hyaluronic acid injections focus on improving joint lubrication and mechanics. The most appropriate option depends on the underlying cause of symptoms.

Pricing varies depending on the product used and treatment course. We offer options from £500. Full details will be discussed during your initial consultation.
