Knee pain can be debilitating, making even simple daily activities—walking, climbing stairs, or sleeping comfortably—feel impossible.

If knee arthritis or another joint condition is holding you back, knee replacement surgery could be the solution to help you move freely again.

With expert surgical techniques and personalised care, our total and partial knee replacement procedures are designed to eliminate pain and restore mobility, so you can get back to living life on your terms.

Knee replacement surgery to get you back to a pain-free life.

Is knee pain stopping you from living fully?

If knee pain makes every step a challenge, you’re not alone.

Many people experience:

Severe pain that disrupts daily life, even at rest.
Stiffness & swelling that limits movement.
Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods.
Dependence on pain relief medications just to get through the day.

We explore all non-surgical options before considering knee replacement, including advanced injections—many patients remain pain-free for years with these treatments.

A proven solution for long-term pain relief

Knee replacement surgery is a highly effective treatment for arthritis and joint damage, providing long-term relief from pain and improving mobility.

The procedure involves:

  • Removing the damaged or arthritic parts of the knee joint.
  • Replacing them with a state-of-the-art implant that mimics natural movement.
  • These modern implants have a smooth, pain free motion with a Polyethylene liner between the metal surfaces.

Depending on your condition, you may need a total knee replacement (TKR) or a partial knee replacement, where only the affected part of the knee is replaced.

If surgery is needed, we prioritise joint-preserving techniques before considering partial or total knee replacement, making sure you get the most suitable treatment for long-term knee health.

"I can walk without the crutches. I am very happy!"

Having had a terrible time over the years trying to get my knee fixed, coming to you was such a different and welcome experience. Nothing was left uncovered by Prof. Wilson and his team. Everything was explained to me and what the outcome would be. Having had the total knee replacement 18 months ago, now it’s been a real life changer. I could not thank them enough.

Clive Cole

You made me completely pain free after my right knee replacement operation. I would just like to say thank you as I’m now living in Cyprus and enjoying scuba diving and golf, things that gave me pain before I saw you.

Steve Took

Professor Wilson and to my surprise a knee replacement was the furthest option for getting rid of the pain and getting me back on my feet.  Professor Wilson had multiple options, all being minimally noninvasive. With an injection and a minor “keyhole” surgery I was pain free and back to normal daily activities in about 6 weeks time. Everyone from the office staff to the nurses at the hospital were helpful in the process from first appointment to the last. I highly recommend Professor Wilson!”

Who is knee replacement surgery for?

You may be a candidate for knee replacement surgery if you have:
  • Osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis).
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis as well as psoriatic arthropathy part of inflammatory arthritis which makes up perhaps 5% of all patients undergoing Knee Replacement
  • A previous knee injury that has led to joint damage.
  • Bone deformity or avascular necrosis (bone death due to poor blood supply).
If your knee pain limits your mobility and non-surgical treatments are no longer effective, a knee replacement could help you regain movement and independence.

Frequently asked questions about knee replacement surgery

We accept many insurance companies, please contact us to discuss your specific case.

Yes, you can. We can book virtual consultations or you can come to our clinic in Harley Street, London.

Our surgeons operate at both the Cromwell Hospital, 164-178 Cromwell Rd, London SW5 0TU and the The London Independent Hospital, 1 Beaumont Square, London E1 4NL.

When you wake up in recovery you will be closely monitored until you’re ready to return to your room; you’ll be offered appropriate pain relief as and when you need it. Depending on the type of surgery you’ve had, you may be able to return home once you’ve had something to eat and drink and are feeling steady. During your hospital stay, your progress will be closely monitored by one of our surgeons, along with a team of ward nurses and physiotherapists.

Most of our patients go home the same day, while some choose to stay overnight.

The time it takes to recover from a knee replacement will depend on how closely you follow your rehabilitation programme once you return home after surgery, but it can be between three months and a year before you get back to normal. To achieve the best possible outcome, it’s important to follow your exercise plan which includes gradually increasing walking, and other low-impact exercises. It’s important to avoid falling or injuring your new knee. Let your dentist know that you’ve had a knee replacement as you may need to take antibiotics before certain dental procedures to avoid the chance of an infection in the joint. Your surgeon will be able to advise you about when it’s safe to drive again – this is usually around 4-6 weeks after surgery.

During your hospital stay, you will be advised about your rehabilitation programme, including any follow-up physiotherapy appointments. Your surgery is likely to be more successful if you understand what your limitations will be after surgery and plan in advance so that you are well supported when you return home. Carrying out your rehabilitation exercises as advised will help you to recover as quickly as possible.
