Simon’s Hip Replacement Journey
“I feel confident and normal. I’m genuinely amazed.”
(0:05) So, when did you have your hip replacement? 15th of October. So, that’s two weeks? Two (0:10) weeks and two days. And no crutches? No, not a crutch in sight. And the other one? Which (0:18) side have you had done? Left. Come walk towards me. And how do you feel when you’re walking? (0:25) Confident, normal.
The only thing I do sense is that I haven’t been exercising my leg muscles (0:31) that much for a few weeks. How much pain are you in? A lot less than it was before. And I would (0:38) say it’s more like stiffness pain, kind of surgical pain, nothing.
Are you surprised (0:45) that you can do that after two weeks? No, because you said it would be like this and I trusted you. (0:52) Good. But when I describe to people what I’ve had and what I’ve gone through, (0:57) no, they’re amazed. I’m genuinely amazed. But I think both you and the physio at the Chromwell kind of cautioned (1:05) me, just don’t suddenly go climbing Everest, take it easy.
So, you’d be up and down the vineyards, (1:13) on the hilly vineyards. I’m making another vineyard. The next region we want to make is really, (1:19) really slow. Perfect.
Is it nice not to have that arthritic pain? Oh yeah. Oh, I think something we (1:26) talked about before from your own experience, kind of mentally it’s left a bit of a scar. So, (1:31) even if physically your body’s saying, no, it’s okay. Mentally, you’re still, (1:36) you’ve got this sense of slight caution, maybe even slight anxiety. And then over time, I think (1:42) you said kind of three, six months in or out from the op.
But I mean, you’ve done quite a lot of (1:46) research. What do you make of this Rottinger approach in terms of… I mean, not having (1:53) understood hip replacement surgery before, I guess I had assumed there would be some kind of surgical (2:01) messing with the muscles to access the joint. So, the idea that there’s this approach, which (2:06) allows you to access the joint without having to really disturb anything with the muscles (2:12) is great. So, it’s kind of reassuring. Two, it speeds up the operation. You said 20, (2:19) but it was 24 minutes, which is still pretty damn good. And speeds up recovery.
And I can only say (2:25) from my own experience, so far, so good. But I’ll see you in a month.
