Surgeon Testimonial from Dr Shuntaro Nejima
I am a Japanese orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee surgery and previously worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Yokohama City University. From 2023 to 2024, I conducted biomechanics research at Imperial College London. Since I had a strong interest in knee osteotomy, I occasionally visited the London Knee Osteotomy Centre to observe surgical procedures.
The London Knee Osteotomy Centre is composed of an outstanding team of experts, including Prof. Wilson and Mr. Khakha, along with Dr. Heerwaarden from the Netherlands and Dr. Kley from Germany. Their exceptional level of expertise and technical skill was truly impressive. Additionally, the center attracts not only patients from within the UK but also from overseas, highlighting its international reputation.
In terms of surgical techniques, I was able to learn a wide variety of osteotomy procedures from these world-renowned instructors. In addition to high tibial osteotomy, distal femoral osteotomy and double-level osteotomy were also performed. Moreover, the surgeries involved not only coronal plane deformity correction but also rotational deformity correction, posterior tibial slope correction, and complex multiplanar deformity correction, allowing me to gain comprehensive knowledge of osteotomies around the knee.
Although I could only visit occasionally due to my research commitments, each visit allowed me to learn multiple fascinating cases in a single day. This made it an extremely efficient learning experience, covering both fundamental and highly complex cases.
Having returned to Japan, I will be resuming my position at Yokohama City University in April 2025. I am confident that the knowledge and experience I gained at the London Knee Osteotomy Centre will be invaluable to my career. Moreover, I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues at the Centre in academic research and educational courses in the future.
I sincerely hope that the expansion of this fellowship program will provide more orthopedic surgeons with the same exceptional learning opportunities I had. I am certain that this will contribute to the advancement of knee osteotomy procedures worldwide.
