Roy’s Osteotomy Experience
(0:00) I’m very happy, it was actually one of the first things I noticed coming out of surgery (0:04) as I woke up. I looked at my leg and I was like very happy, I was like yes it’s straight (0:09) I could see visibly it’s been debowed and rotated back into a proper shape and yeah it looks good.
(0:17) We used the PSI guide, there’s the wound, and we rotate your foot. Just show us where your foot (0:22) was before we started, just mimic the position. So it’s turned out about that much and your leg (0:28) was pretty bowed. So if you come back into the sort of standard position, kneecap forward, (0:34) now I can see the foot and the knee and the head all line up nicely.
So it’s six weeks, (0:39) how much pain are you in? Nothing really, very, very, very tiny, tiny, it’s basically nothing. (0:45) I’ve been off painkillers for maybe about three weeks completely. I can bend it, no pain. (0:53) Push down for me, lift up in the air, bend the knee for me as much as you can, very good, (1:00) perfect.
We’ve got the hinge screw, this is something that Kristian and I, that’s our idea, (1:04) that’s a patented idea from me and Kristian. So this is the front view, this is a front to back (1:09) screw to hold everything in place and obviously we’ve got our plate and you can see that front (1:14) to back screw here for the second cut that we’ve made which is downward.
So the cut’s gone like (1:19) this and down and we’ve rotated and we’ve straightened up the leg. It was a lot of (1:24) research trying to understand what’s wrong with my leg because I was in pain for quite a few years. (1:28) You’re an engineer aren’t you? Yeah, I’m an engineer.
So I tried to sort of do my own (1:34) research and I was going onto Google. I think I found your name coming up on forums and websites (1:41) as sort of like the knee expert in sort of the whole leg and things like that, (1:46) not just to do with the knee. I think I saw your name come up on osteotomy because I realised my (1:51) legs were a bit wonky and then I booked the appointment.
I spoke to you and Dr Ronald (1:59) We used computer simulations to work out what we needed to do to rotate the foot and to get the (2:07) leg. So here you can see us placing the PSI onto the skin. We’ve made the incision. Here it looks (2:13) as though there’s nothing guiding us but of course there’s a piece of plastic on the side (2:18) of here which is the PSI guide that’s allowing us to put the wires in to lock the PSI.
What do you (2:23) think about all the technology, the expertise? I mean how would you describe it if you had to (2:28) summarise things? I mean yeah as an engineer I like it so I get to see the models that you’ve (2:33) done of the legs so taking the scans putting them into a 3D model which is really cool to look at (2:38) as an engineer and it’s meticulous so using new innovative technology (2:43) into the medical industry is nice to see.
