Para – Hip Replacement

Para’s Hip Replacement Journey

(0:00) I can tell people I have no fear of having another one if I had to, (0:04) with him, but only him. I’m sorry. If you teach people, I’m not going to them.

It’s got to be (0:10) Christian. I mean, I do the gym, swimming, but there was a point when I felt like if I’m, (0:19) an example, I’m going to, I’m travelling, and then obviously airports, you have to walk a lot, (0:25) you know, long distances from A to B to get your flight or whatever. And I could start feeling (0:29) there was a kind of tightness and aching there and feeling tired.

Long walks was difficult. (0:39) I had to stop. I couldn’t do long walks anymore.

What I love about Christian, he never doesn’t (0:44) really put pressure. He doesn’t say you have to have surgery. He leaves it to you.

You decide (0:50) and your body will tell you. And I was ready. And I said, I want to meet Christian again.

I (0:57) think it’s a good time to get this hip done. And I cannot believe it was done in 15 minutes. (1:02) I don’t know anyone.

There are so many surgeons. I was looking and doing my research (1:08) and my family couldn’t believe, and friends, they said, you must be crazy. You’re making this up.

(1:13) I said, no, I’m not. There’s obviously a genius man there. He’s done it in 15 minutes.

I’ve heard (1:18) from people, oh, it’s very painful afterwards. You’re in agony. You’re going to take serious.

(1:23) I didn’t feel pain. OK, you are still under the anaesthetic, but I didn’t feel pain like I was (1:29) expecting. And to be honest, by the end, in the evening, I told the nurses, I don’t want this.

(1:34) I just want paracetamol. Third day, I stopped all paracetamol. They kept saying, oh, you must (1:39) take paracetamol for a week.

The hospital told me and I didn’t need it. Why would I take it? (1:43) I was there for two nights. I was supposed to be there for two nights and the next I decided (1:47) I can go home.

So from actually day three, I started doing full exercise. You know, (1:54) all my exercises, the cold pack that I was told I should do, Adrian told me to do. (2:00) I was having physio from physio lab and my osteopath was giving me regular treatment.

(2:07) And literally day by day, I was progressing. So I’ve got in touch with my instructor in the gym, (2:14) Rose, who’s very knowledgeable. I said, Rose, you know, I feel like starting a bit of, (2:18) she said, I’ll come home with my weights.

Let’s start a bit in the house. She was also scared (2:22) because she, everybody thinks of the old school hip surgery. She said, oh, my God, if you do (2:27) all this stuff that we are doing in the gym, you haven’t looked at this.

I said, no, let’s start (2:31) slowly and see how I progress. A week of her coming twice a week in the house, doing some (2:36) weights. I was feeling fine.

She said, my God, she can’t believe she said, I don’t believe you (2:42) just had a hip surgery. So she said, you can come back to the gym. So I’ll be back in the gym (2:47) three days a week, one-to-one with her.

I do aqua class and I’m swimming. I think the crutches was (2:54) for about three days, but, um, first day two, second day, I took off the, I just had one. (3:02) And that was only because the guy came and showed me how to go up and down the stairs.

(3:06) And I’ve got quite a lot of stairs in the house. So he said that, you know, how there’s a technique (3:10) of going up. To be honest, I actually found the crutches third or fourth day was actually (3:15) annoying me.

I wanted to walk without the crutches. Day to day. I don’t think about it.

(3:21) I’m not worried about anything. I’m not thinking about it. Okay.

And I would say to all patients, (3:27) don’t be afraid of exercise because that helps the healing process. For me, healing was eating good (3:33) food. Um, because that helps in a nutrients that I had, you know, I was taking a lot of good vitamin C (3:39) and then exercise move.

Don’t be, I’m scared to get up from my bed or I just want to lie down with (3:45) my legs up. Yeah. You have to do that in between the first few a week to, to help you to heal, (3:51) but moving is very important.

And prior to your surgery, I prepared myself with (3:57) hell of a lot of exercise to keep my muscles strong, no fear and go because you don’t need (4:05) to have fear when someone like him is working on you. And I can’t believe it. I was, you know, (4:11) the best thing I did was to have Christian do my surgery because nobody believes my family, (4:17) my friends, my staff, I’ve got a huge office, you know, they can’t believe, actually they don’t even (4:23) believe that I had surgery.

Um, this Christmas party we had for all our staff and I was there (4:28) with them and we were having a great time. They said, Paul, you had such a major surgery. (4:33) No one believes it.

I mean, it’s the state of the art kind of surgery for me anyway.
