Martin’s Osteotomy / Leg Alignment Surgery
“It feels like a new knee again!”
(0:05) Here we are, it’s not quite 24 hours since we did surgery. (0:10) We’ve done an osteotomy and we’ve got a nice straight leg here (0:14) and that was done relatively late yesterday afternoon. (0:17) How are you feeling, how much pain are you in? (0:18) None. (0:19) No pain at all? (0:20) No. (0:20) Does that surprise you (0:21) even that we’ve straightened out your leg? (0:23) Yes. (0:23) Effectively? (0:23) Yeah.
(0:25) What were you expecting? (0:27) I’d be a lot more uncomfortable than I am now, (0:30) but I think the GameReady helps. (0:32) Ice machine? (0:33) The ice machine, yeah. (0:34) That’s been a godsend, (0:36) but even that’s been off now for about 45 minutes (0:39) and I’m still fine. (0:40) But have you looked into osteotomy surgery (0:42) in terms of how most people are after the surgery? (0:45) Yeah, I’ve had this one done by you before (0:47) and this has gone back to being absolutely solid (0:51) and this is why I’ve come to do this leg.
(0:53) Perfect. (0:53) It was just, it’s gone back to being pretty much. (0:56) And was that a similar experience? (0:58) I think it was a little bit different, (1:00) just at this point I know what to expect now. (1:02) This one was a little bit, (1:04) I was a little bit more tentative on this one (1:05) and I also went to Clavadel for a week. (1:10) Bit of rehab, but you don’t probably need it. (1:12) I mean, there’s very little swelling. (1:13) Have you been up and about? (1:14) Yeah, I’ve got myself changed, (1:15) went to the toilet, got washed, (1:17) been back in bed, went downstairs for an x-ray, (1:20) come back upstairs, had breakfast. (1:21) Time for discharge. (1:22) Brilliant. (1:22) Nice to see you, cheers. (1:23) Thanks for the post.
(1:25) So Martin’s four weeks, (1:27) four weeks post-HTO. (1:29) Four to five weeks, yeah. (1:29) Four to five weeks. (1:30) There’s the incision. (1:33) And just lift your leg up in the air for us, Martin, (1:35) and bend it for us. (1:37) And what sort of things are you able to do at the moment? (1:40) Squatting, I’m on my bike twice a day now, every day.
(1:45) Any pain? (1:46) Nope. (1:47) Any pain in walking? (1:47) Nope. (1:49) Paracetamol, nothing, not taking any painkillers? (1:50) I had the ice machine post-operation (1:52) and that’s all I had, I didn’t take any painkillers. (1:55) And so you can run across the road? (1:58) Yeah. (1:58) So it feels like a normal knee? (2:00) Well, it’s stronger than when, (2:02) it feels like my new knee again, (2:03) it’s just completely different. (2:04) Yeah.
(2:05) So it’s not the most painful operation in the world? (2:08) No, definitely not. (2:11) And obviously you’ve had the other side, (2:13) the other side was a bit slower, wasn’t it? (2:14) Yeah, that was a bit slower. (2:15) But this one’s been a doddle, as you put it? (2:18) Strangely, yeah, a doddle, (2:20) just it was completely different to the first one. (2:22) Yeah, great. (2:22) But this wasn’t horrendously painful. (2:24) No. (2:25) It was a bit painful. (2:26) Yeah. (2:26) But compared to an ACL operation, (2:29) it was an absolute walk in the park. (2:31) So much less than an ACL? (2:33) Much less, much, much less.
(2:36) And how far can you walk at the moment? (2:41) What are you up to? (2:41) I’m biking, I’m doing a bike ride, (2:44) I did 10 miles over the course of the day, (2:46) I had two different bike rides. (2:47) Walking, I don’t know, I don’t put a limit to it (2:50) because I can just walk.
(2:51) Great. (2:51) So I just, I walk. (2:53) Fantastic, so happy patient? (2:54) Very, very happy.
(2:55) Great.
