Surgeon Testimonial from Dr Jonathan Peters
From the moment I met Professor Wilson and Dr Kley at the Cromwell Hospital for my observation day, it was clear that they and their multi-disciplinary team were providing a top class dynamic patient-centred service, all with a smile on their faces.
Prior to my day with the team at the Cromwell, I actually read about the total hip replacement muscle-sparing technique (Röttinger approach) that Dr Kley and Professor Wilson were performing in an online newspaper article I received from my mother-in-law! Everyone, including Jo Woloszyn (B.Braun Aesculap Business Development Manager), could not have been more helpful and welcoming to make the day happen.
Dr Kley and Professor Wilson are both incredibly highly skilled surgeons, with Dr Kley performing three total hip replacements on the day. The first took 30 minutes from start to finish on a patient with a BMI of 53. The second took 15 minutes and the third took 20 minutes as a teaching case with Dr Kley explaining each step to me. Speaking with the anaesthetist, their experience was that patients having this type of hip replacement required less pain relief post-operatively, which was apparent when I saw them very comfortable after their operations. Furthermore, all three patients were discharged home the following day walking with crutches, after a full physiotherapy assessment.
Overall, as a surgical trainee I fully appreciate there are multiple different approaches to use when performing a hip replacement, but this is one that I would fully recommend any hip surgeon to also observe and see for themselves. All the best to Professor Wilson, Dr Kley and the whole team for the future!
