David’s Bilateral Osteotomy Surgery
(0:00) Five months down the line, I had, I mean, 25 miles plus on a mountain bike, all be electric (0:05) and a bit of assistance. But I’m walking everywhere, I’m sleeping fine, I don’t get that knee pain (0:11) at night. It’s always been aching for several years, but it went within three months from (0:16) being able to do most of the things I wanted to do, to suddenly being, I couldn’t walk (0:22) down to the pub without having to stop.
They just ached the whole time. (0:26) And you were hobbling around a bit. (0:27) I went to bed every couple of hours because one knee or the other was hurting, so you (0:31) had to turn over to rest, and it just sort of cycled through.
(0:35) Pre-op long leg x-rays. So we did these simultaneously three weeks ago, and his pain levels are two (0:42) out of ten, and he’s sorted over to the couch. Your wounds have healed up nicely.
Can you (0:47) bend the knees for me? So, fantastic movement on the left. The right one, which is a much (0:53) bigger correction. Pretty good, look at that.
Three weeks. Wounds have healed really nicely. (0:59) And how’s the experience been? I mean, obviously, we broke both your legs, and you had them (1:04) straight.
How do they feel now when you look at them, when you look at your straight legs? (1:07) I don’t want my legs to be broken. (1:09) Yeah, you were pretty crooked before. (1:11) Yeah.
If I’m just sat doing nothing much at all, I’m free at the moment. (1:16) Brilliant. (1:17) A bit of low-level ache on the right.
(1:18) This is five months post-op, so you can see on the left, it’s very fuzzy here. It’s almost, (1:24) well, it’s healed as far as there. You can see the hinge screws that we’ve pioneered (1:28) that idea.
How did you find having them both done at the same time? (1:33) Interesting. I think the big benefit was it was one lot of discomfort, and because you’ve (1:40) done both, you have to load both at the same time, so you’re not sort of favouring one good leg. (1:46) Previously, I couldn’t kick a football, anything that put a sideways torsion on my knee, (1:50) and that’s now gone.
(1:53) So, so far, so good. Things are pretty good. (1:55) So far, so good, and if it keeps improving like it is doing, you know, provisionally skiing (1:59) in January.
(2:01) I think we’re definitely in for that. Yeah, brilliant. (2:04) I would do both again without hesitation.
