Andy’s Osteotomy Surgery and Recovery
(0:00) I can stand up now almost indefinitely. You can feel it because the leg now goes straight. (0:06) The muscles in the tendons relax in a sort of vertical position before it was constantly straining. (0:13) And the small muscles straining right.
(0:14) The leg wouldn’t straighten, so it was sort of catching on the kneecap. (0:18) So it basically didn’t go out like that. So how bent was it, before we started? (0:23) It wouldn’t go beyond there in terms of straightness before we started. (0:26) To walk around on a bent leg like that? (0:30) In that compartment there, developed really bad arthritis. I’ve had two arthroscopies over the last 15-20 years, (0:36) which cut away my meniscus and basically created arthritis.
(0:39) What we’ve done is take a slice of bone and then a closing wedge. (0:43) We can’t even see it at the six-week x-ray, but there’s a line there. (0:46) We’ve taken out the wedge of bone, fixed it with this plate, (0:50) which has got the leg straight in the frontal plane. (0:53) And then on the side here, we’ve actually changed the arc of movement. (0:57) Kristian actually did this. We worked underneath the tubercle here. (1:00) Ronald, me and Kristian beavering away together on this one. (1:04) And we actually left his tibial tubercle on, so Andy was able to mobilise fully afterwards.
(1:09) Huge improvement in terms of straightening. Very good at standing up. (1:13) I’m not getting static pain or at least when I’m sitting. (1:16) When I’m sitting down, lying down, the knee doesn’t hurt at all.(1:19) Can you put it out straight? (1:21) I’m bending myself.
