Andrew’s Osteotomy Surgery
(0:00) I don’t have any symptoms. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a total success. My knee now feels like it was (0:07) 10, 20 years ago, so it’s quite remarkable.
10 years since the meniscus first tore after a sports (0:15) accident. I got to the point where I was uncomfortable in general walking and I was (0:21) wearing a knee brace. Things like trying to just kick a football with grandchildren was not (0:25) possible because I’d get shooting pains up and down my leg.
Again, skiing became impossible. (0:31) It started off as a mild progression of getting worse and then it got to the point before I had (0:36) the operation where it was rapidly getting worse.
Here’s the initial placing of the wire (0:43) and then you can see the outline of the wedge that we’ve placed. We’ve obviously realigned the knee (0:48) to take the pressure off the inside and load up more on the outside here at the end because we (0:54) just wanted to make absolutely sure. Belt and brace is here. Place of the staple as well, so it’s the final (1:00) image.
So this is where the wear is and we’ve moved the weight bearing line from here to here (1:06) and we’ve stabilised.
How painful was the operation? How difficult was it for you to recover from the (1:11) surgery? Not particularly difficult at all. Once I was off crutches in a few weeks, I started (1:18) light physio and that progressed and really the recovery has been remarkable.
(1:24) Probably after about two weeks, I could walk around and I went back to work. I mean, I have a (1:28) sedentary job, so I was either at home in the car or behind the desk in the office. That worked (1:34) extremely well.
It’s just a bit sore and the physio lab machine, I think, is a wonderful (1:39) thing. The ice machine. It kept all the swelling down and I’ve since referred other friends to that (1:46) device and they’ve raved about it as well.
So this is where we are now. So completely healed. (1:52) My chest looks great and Andrew’s obviously very happy. I’m very pleased. Brilliant, that’s great.
