Prof. Adrian Wilson - specialist orthopaedic and knee surgeon

Specialist in Knee Surgery and ACL Repair

As an internationally recognised ACL specialist, Professor Wilson has founded new ways to treat anterior cruciate ligament injuries—especially common among athletes and active individuals. He pioneered the all-inside ACL reconstruction technique and performed the first live surgical demonstration of this approach at the German Arthroscopic Association in 2009.

He also carried out the first all-inside PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) technique and was the first to publish on ACL repair in children, which led to a dedicated focus on managing paediatric and adolescent ACL injuries, alongside those in adults.

His work with internal bracing and repair strategies allows for faster recovery times, greater joint stability, and a more natural healing process compared to traditional ACL reconstruction. His reputation for excellence and his innovative approach draws patients from around the globe seeking exceptional results in ligament preservation.

Osteotomy Innovator and Advocate for Knee Preservation

Professor Wilson is also a renowned osteotomy innovator, redefining how orthopaedic surgeons approach joint preservation. Osteotomy, a procedure that realigns bones to relieve pressure on damaged areas of the knee, is central to his philosophy of knee preservation. By correcting the biomechanics of the leg, this technique can significantly delay or even prevent the need for knee replacement surgery.

His contributions has redefined how orthopaedic surgeons approach join preservation. He played a key role in the development of the Type two Active Motion Plate, which is now the most widely used implant globally for high tibial osteotomy (HTO) surgery.

He co-founded the Scientific Advisory Board for “Newclip” alongside his colleague Professor Kristian Kley where they have pioneered numerous surgical techniques and developed a range of innovative implants and plating systems for osteotomy. He also established osteotomy training courses in the UK which have since expanded internationally, allowing Professor Wilson and his colleagues to train thousands of surgeons across the globe.

A True Surgical Pioneer

Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Wilson has been recognized as a surgical pioneer, introducing advanced technologies and surgical techniques that are now used by orthopaedic specialists worldwide. His innovative mindset, combined with exceptional technical skill, places him at the cutting edge of modern knee surgery.

Beyond ligament and osteotomy surgery, he continues to be at the forefront of innovation in orthopaedics; developing new surgical tools, leading clinical research and educating the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons through international lectures and hands-on workshops. He travels monthly to lecture and teach at major international meetings sharing his experience and innovation with peers worldwide.

Together with Professors Kristian Kley and Ronald Van Heerwaarden, Professor Wilson co-founded the London Osteotomy Centre, a globally unique collaborative surgical unit. They operate together in theatre at least once a month, managing some of the most complex and challenging osteotomy cases from around the world. The centre is also a hub for education and mentorship, running an active teaching program that welcomes follows and consultants each week to observe and learn advanced techniques in ligament reconstruction, osteotomy and joint replacement surgery.

Patient-Centred Care

What truly sets Professor Wilson apart is his patient-focused approach. Every treatment plan is customized to the individual—whether it's an elite athlete recovering from injury or someone looking to stay active later in life. From minimally invasive arthroscopy to complex multi-ligament reconstructions, his procedures are designed to restore function, reduce pain, and help patients return to the activities they love.

The success of any surgical program lies in patient outcomes. Here’s what two of our recent knee surgery patients had to say:
