There’s no doubt about it, technology is changing how patients think about hip replacement surgery

Robotic Hip Replacement: Helpful, But Not the Whole Story

With the continued rise of technology in orthopaedics, robotic-assisted hip replacements is one of the most talked-about developments.

NICE1 describes robot-assisted orthopaedic surgery as technology that supports the surgeon using imaging, feedback and greater control during procedures. In hip replacement, this may help with implant positioning and alignment.

Nevertheless, robotic technology does not automatically guarantee better recovery. NICE1 also highlights the need for further evidence on outcomes such as length of stay, complications, patient-reported outcomes and revision rates.

What does this mean for patients? While Robotics may help with accuracy, your recovery still depends on surgical approach, tissue handling, implant choice and aftercare.

Modern Implant Materials

One area technology has more objectively had a big win is improving the materials used in hip replacements.

Modern implants may use combinations of titanium, ceramic and highly cross-linked polyethylene. These materials are chosen to support stability, smooth movement and long-term wear resistance.

A 2024 University of Bristol2 study using National Joint Registry data found that implant material choice can affect revision risk, with certain ceramic or oxidised zirconium heads combined with highly cross-linked polyethylene showing the lowest risk of revision over 15 years.

For patients, this means implant choice is not a minor detail. The right materials, selected for the right patient, can play an important role in long-term success.

Muscle-Sparing Surgery

Not all hip replacement technology is digital. Some of the most important advances are in surgical technique, planning and recovery design.
