>> From Orthopaedic Surgeon to Patient: Professor Adrian Wilson’s Kley Rapid Hip Experience

A Leading Surgeon’s First-Hand Account of Modern Hip Replacement

As an internationally recognised orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Adrian Wilson has spent his career at the forefront of surgical innovation. He has seen countless patients benefit from the latest advancements, but recently, he experienced a life-changing procedure from a unique perspective: as the patient himself.

When his own hip became painful due to advanced osteoarthritis, Professor Wilson chose to undergo the Kley Rapid Hip replacement performed by his colleague and friend... Dr Kristian Kley. This personal journey offers a powerful, first-hand account of the speed, safety, and remarkable recovery made possible by a modern, minimally invasive approach.

Who is Dr. Kristian Kley and What is the Kley Rapid Hip?

Operating in both Germany and the UK, Dr. Kristian Kley is a leading consultant orthopaedic surgeon who developed the Kley Rapid Hip procedure. This advanced, minimally invasive method for hip replacement surgery is a refinement of the Rottinger approach.

The Kley Rapid Hip is considered one of the safest and most effective hip replacement procedures globally. It is a day-case procedure designed to be muscle-sparing and suitable for a wide range of patients.

Key benefits and outcomes of the Kley Rapid Hip include:

  • Rapid recovery leaving 98% of patients to be discharged within 24 hours
  • A 0% infection rate, 0% blood clot rate, and 0% hip dislocation or fracture rate
  • Dr. Kley has performed over 3,000 hip procedures using this technique

The uniqueness of the method is further highlighted by Dr. Kley’s extensive experience and the practice of having two surgeons present during the procedure. You can read more about this innovative procedure on our dedicated Kley Rapid Hip page.

Diagnosing the Pain: A Surgeon’s Reality

Professor Wilson’s story began with a familiar pain. After taking some X-rays and an MRI scan, he discovered he had advanced osteoarthritis in his hip.

At just 51 years old, he knew he was younger than the traditional demographic for hip replacements, but he points out that 40% of the procedures performed in Dr Kley's practice are for patients between the ages of 40 and 55. His own experience underscores the fact that age is not the sole factor in deciding on a hip replacement.

Why He Chose the Kley Rapid Hip

As a surgeon himself, Professor Wilson was uniquely positioned to appreciate the nuances of Dr Kley’s technique. He highlights that he chose Dr Kley because of his exceptionally low complication rate and his completely unique approach to hip replacement. He saw the Kley Rapid Hip as a glimpse into the future of orthopaedics, believing that this approach "will be the most commonly performed approach" in ten years' time.

The technique’s efficiency was a major factor, with Dr Kley able to complete a hip replacement in less than half an hour. Professor Wilson also praises the underlying surgical principles, noting that Dr Kley’s technique provides the most "straightforward access to the acetabulum" while preserving the "integrity of the muscular cuff". This muscle-sparing method, which minimises damage to surrounding tissues, is fundamental to the rapid recovery.

A Recovery That Amazed Even a Surgeon

Professor Wilson’s recovery was nothing short of remarkable. After the surgery, he experienced pain for only about 15 minutes before it subsided completely. He was walking and comfortable within just a few hours of the operation

By the next day, he was mobile enough to take the lift down for an X-ray and did not need to use crutches or a wheelchair at any point. Just five days later, he was able to drive.

His recovery continued at a fast pace, allowing him to return to a full schedule. He was back seeing patients at four weeks and was operating alongside Dr Kley again at six weeks post-surgery. He proudly describes his hip as a "forgotten hip," a term used for a successful replacement where you no longer feel or register that you've had anything done.

The Ultimate Test: Mount Kilimanjaro

As a testament to the success of his hip replacement, Professor Wilson climbed Mount Kilimanjaro just a few years after his surgery.

This incredible achievement demonstrates the full restoration of mobility and confidence that a high-quality, modern hip replacement can provide. You can watch his full recorded testimonial below:
