Double Hip Replacement Cost: Both Hips at Once – What Does it Cost and is it Worth it?

>> Double Hip Replacement Cost: Both Hips at Once – What Does it Cost and is it Worth it?

For those with osteoarthritis, there are options. If both hips need replacing, you can either treat them separately (staged) or replace both during one (bilateral) operation.

How does the double hip replacement cost differ from a single hip replacement?

Two staged procedures = two hospital admissions, two anaesthetics and two recovery periods.

Simultaneous bilateral hip replacement combines treatment into one surgical session (only suitable for appropriately selected patients).

The Single vs Double Hip Replacement Cost Comparison

At Orthopaedic Innovation, we offer singular Kley Rapid Hip replacement for a fixed price of £13,000. If you were to have them both done simultaneously, we offer a fixed price of £24,000.

Option OI price
Two separate Kley Rapid Hip procedures £26,000
Both hips replaced together £24,000
Direct saving £2,000

The £2,000 saving is only part of the financial difference. It’s important to consider that one recovery may also reduce total time away from work, travel, practical support and disruption at home.

One Recovery Instead of Two

Hip replacements have a pathway every patient must go through. With staged surgery, each hip has its own assessment, admission, operation and rehabilitation period.

That doesn’t mean it’s automatically the worser option. For patients whose health or circumstances make a shorter individual procedure safer or more manageable, this may be preferable.

With simultaneous surgery, you’ll only need to go through this process once which means:

  • One operation and anaesthetic
  • One hospital admission
  • One rehabilitation period
  • No untreated arthritic hip limiting the first recovery

Why OI Offers Bilateral Surgery

Our technique led by Dr Kristian Kley, the Kley Rapid Hip,  uses a modified Röttinger approach that works between the major muscles.

Because each hip usually takes around 20–30 minutes, we’re able to treat both sides within a comparatively short total operating time. The pathway is designed around early mobilisation and same-day or next-day discharge.

A Patient’s Perspective

Susan described the immediate difference after having both hips replaced: “The instant relief was just phenomenal! Got rid of the crutches instantly.”

Her experience highlights the appeal of treating both painful hips in one procedure, with one operation and one recovery.

Who May Be Suitable?

Bilateral surgery may be considered when:

  • Both hips have advanced arthritis
  • Both sides significantly affect daily life
  • The patient is medically fit for a larger operation
  • Anaesthetic and cardiovascular risks are acceptable
  • The anatomy suits the proposed approach
  • Support is available during early recovery

Note: patients with significant heart, lung or other medical conditions may be better suited to staged procedures.

Is Bilateral Hip Replacement Worth It?

The benefits are clear. For the right patient, bilateral replacement means one operation, one recovery, no untreated painful hip delaying progress. And for OI patients, a £3,000 saving.

Because early recovery can be more demanding, the decision should remain clinical first and financial second. To explore your options with our team:
