Meniscal damage: causes, symptoms & treatment options

Proven, trusted Orthopaedic surgery to get you back to living your life sooner

What is meniscal damage?

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber between the thigh and shin bone. Damage to this cartilage, often called a meniscus tear, can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the knee.

What causes meniscal damage?

Twisting or sudden movements

Common in sports that involve quick direction changes.

Heavy impact

A hard fall or a blow to the knee.

Degenerative wear and tear

Cartilage naturally weakens with age, making it more prone to injury.

Common symptoms of meniscal damage

  • Pain along the knee joint
  • Swelling and stiffness
  • Clicking, popping, or locking sensation
  • Difficulty fully bending or straightening the knee

How is meniscal damage diagnosed?

A doctor or specialist may diagnose the injury using:

Physical examination

Checking knee movement and signs of swelling.

MRI scan

The best way to assess the severity of the tear.

Treatment Options for meniscal damage

Non-surgical treatments (no surgery needed)

Rest & ice therapy

Reduces swelling and pain.

Physiotherapy

Ā Strengthening surrounding muscles to support the knee.

Pain relief medication

Anti-inflammatories help reduce discomfort.

Surgical treatments (when surgery is needed)

If symptoms persist, surgery may be needed:

Meniscus repair

Stitching the torn cartilage back together.

Meniscectomy

Removing the damaged part of the meniscus.

Recovery & Rehabilitation

Minor tears

Heal within a few weeks with rest.

Surgical cases

Recovery can take 3-6 months, with physiotherapy.

When should you see a specialist?

If knee pain worsens, locks in place, or causes instability, a specialist assessment is recommended.
