Orthopaedic Innovation

Professor Adrian Wilson

Knee and Hip Specialist

Prof. Adrian Wilson - specialist orthopaedic and knee surgeon

I’m Professor Adrian Wilson, a specialist knee and hip surgeon with a passion for helping people regain movement, reduce pain, and return to the activities they love

With decades of experience in orthopaedic surgery, I’ve dedicated my career to pioneering new techniques in knee preservation, ligament reconstruction, and joint replacement—giving my patients the best possible outcomes with faster recovery times.

I know that knee problems can be life-limiting, affecting everything from walking to exercise and everyday activities. That’s why my approach is patient-focused and results-driven, ensuring every individual gets the most advanced, least invasive treatment possible.

I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the most respected orthopaedic specialists in the world, pushing the boundaries of knee surgery through innovation, research, and education.

I believe in sharing knowledge, shaping the future of knee surgery, and, most importantly, helping my patients get back to living life without limitations.

Innovations in knee surgery

Throughout my career, I have worked at the forefront of orthopaedic innovation, developing new surgical techniques that have transformed knee surgery worldwide.

  • Pioneering ACL and PCL reconstruction techniques – I developed and patented the "All Inside" ACL and PCL and Arthrex graft tube system reconstruction methods, which are now widely used to improve knee stability and recovery.
  • Innovator of the Internal Brace technique – A breakthrough in ligament repair, this approach strengthens ligament reconstructions and allows patients to return to normal movement faster.
  • Transforming osteotomy surgery – I’ve played a key role in advancing modern osteotomy techniques, a joint-preserving surgery that helps patients avoid full knee replacements.
  • Knee preservation in young athletes – My work on ligament repair in children and young adults has helped thousands return to sport without unnecessary invasive procedures.

By combining innovation with a minimally invasive approach, my goal is always to deliver better results, shorter recovery times, and longer-lasting solutions for my patients.

A patient-first approach

At the heart of everything I do is a commitment to my patients. I understand that undergoing surgery can be daunting, and my goal is to provide the highest standard of care, from initial consultation to full recovery.

I take the time to listen to my patients, understand their goals, and tailor treatments to suit their individual needs.

Whether it’s joint preservation, ligament repair, or full knee replacement, my focus is always on delivering the best possible outcome with the least invasive approach.

  • Ligament reinforcement with Internal Brace:
In 2013 Adrian presented a technique to augment a cruciate reconstruction with a composite polymer fibre tape, which has since become known as an ‘internal brace’.
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair:
Adrian has used fibre tape extensively for ACL Repair, and it has become especially useful in children’s ACL surgery. His team’s paper, published in 2016, on ‘Paediatric ACL repair reinforced with temporary internal bracing’ is the first to present ACL repair in children.
  • All-Inside technique for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) repair:
  • Adrian has helped to develop a new surgical technique known as the All-Inside ‘translateral’ approach, along with the instruments needed to carry out this pioneering procedure.
  • Anterolateral ligament:
Adrian has been involved for some years in the Anterolateral Ligament Expert Group, working with Dr Steven Claes and other experts to determine the function and significance of this structure, as well as surgical techniques for its reconstruction.
  • The CoolCut CaliBrator:
Adrian worked with the manufacturer, Arthrex, to develop the CaliBrator for anterolateral ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
  • Graft compression tubes:
This was an innovation of Adrian’s that allows the surgeon to downsize any graft – sometimes significantly – in order to take less bone from the patient when drilling the tunnel for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.
